According to a recent study, young people diagnosed with cancer are more than two times as likely to file for bankruptcy compared to cancer free young people.

Dr. Scott Ramsey of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and his co-authors found strong evidence linking cancer diagnosis and the risk of bankruptcy. According to a database of people aged 21 and above in western Washington, younger people diagnosed with cancer had a risk 2.5 times greater than people without cancer of filing for bankruptcy. The researchers pointed out that young people diagnosed with cancer may be influenced by other earlier debts that they already have and not having enough income to pay for basic expenses, causing them to seek debt relief through bankruptcy.
